Born into poverty, the lack of indoor plumbing did not define me. Our mountain home, built by my single mother out of logs cut from the land, was an oasis of pine trees, deer and blue skies.

I marveled at the mountains and
the clear blue skies.
There is nothing romantic about being poor. But there is magic in connection with the earth, nature and God.
I was born to a single mother. She rode motorcycles. She built our home by hand. She created her own rules. I am her son.
I was raised by teachers who believed I had promise. They invested in me. I work daily to return the gifts they gave.
I was guided by my uncle - my father figure - a petroleum executive and an engineer who measured three times before he acted. I live by his lessons. Study deeply.
I was nurtured by my aunt - my caring second mother - an educator who today still reminds me to act with humility, grace and gratitude. I live by her rules. Be humble and thankful.
I died when I was 14.
Pronounced dead in the emergency room, I arose minutes later covered with a shroud. For most people, what happens during death is belief and faith. For me, it is lived experience.
I spent what seemed like eternity in a light of complete love, a world of music and waveforms, a place of profound peace.
I was returned to this life, this time, knowing that I had a mission. I would spend years seeking it out.
I am still that quiet mountain boy.
Changed by God.
Thankful for every day, for each is an extra day.
I have already been dead.
There is nothing left to fear.
Each day of my life is a gift.
I live it, imperfectly, seeking to build a future for souls who will never know me.
We live in a world of abundance.
Each day is a gift.
That is the lesson of my childhood.

Invited to study at the world's leading schools, my education was funded by the grace of those who gave scholarships for the "promising but poor".

From the start, my passion became finding solutions by bringing together many voices.
No volunteer program for the local hospital? Let's create one.
No statewide civil rights group?
Let's convene one.
Challenged to envision a next decade of health care for millions, we listened deeply.
Honored to write policy for education, health care and economic development for First Nations, we smoked the pipe, sweat together, and Talked Story.
My first business employed a team of 600. At the age of 25, I made every mistake. Experience is the best teacher.
Working with sovereigns, governors and presidents, problems without solutions were my mission by age 30.
I failed often. With the help of others, I learned more than I failed.
Invited into one of the world's first predictive technology teams by age 32, the work sharpened my inquiry skills. Leading global teams, completing mergers & acquisitions, and building predictive products accelerated my learning.
Technology patented at that time would return nearly a billion dollars 15 years later.
My first CEO position was at age 36. We built a JV in China along with the world's largest data sets and precision predictive models.
Learner. Builder. Leader.
I look back today and am thankful for the lessons:
We do not grow from success.
We learn in failure.
We build from it towards the next horizon.
Degrees matter less than character, integrity, and curiosity. Solving problems creates deeper understanding. Serving others is the greatest reward.
Experience is the best education.
No one person achieves much of anything.
Together, we can achieve everything.
